Mikisew Cree First Nation Education Authority
In the spring of 2019, Mikisew Cree First Nation (MCFN), Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) and the Fort Chipewyan Metis (FCM) declared a state of educational emergency in the community. Since this declaration, collaboratively the three Indigenous groups have been working to increase academic excellence with culture, language and the land as a foundation to learning. This included our community Grade 8 – 12 secondary school programs established and operated by Mikisew Cree First Nation Education Authority.
Since Mikisew Cree First Nation launched the school, we've celebrated 121 graduates, and thousands of credits. We've addressed well-being, land-based learning, post-secondary, sports, travel and careers in various innovative ways. In 2023, Indspire Awarded Mikisew Cree First Nation Education Authority with the National Organization Award.
VISION: To continue the current Grade 8 to 12 Educational Services, and work in partnership with with fellow Nations, community organizations, regional organizations, Treaty 6,7 and 8, and national organizations for the educational, cultural, mental, physical, and emotional well-being, . In a few years, work with a post-secondary institute to offer college / university classes to graduates.
