What job seekers should know
For many job seekers, the skilled trades offer something that can be difficult to find in other career paths: the chance to learn practical skills, see the results of your work and continue developing as your experience grows. Commercial roofing is one trade that offers far more variety than many people realize.
A commercial roofing career is not simply about installing roofing materials. A successful project depends on people with different strengths and skill sets. Application roofers work hands-on with flat and low-slope roofing systems. Service technicians diagnose leaks, complete repairs and help building owners prevent future problems. Foremen coordinate crews, safety and project sequencing. Behind the scenes, estimators, project managers, administrators and other support roles help keep projects moving.
For someone considering the industry, one of the biggest advantages is the opportunity to build skills through experience. New team members can learn from experienced tradespeople while developing knowledge in areas such as roofing systems, tools and equipment, jobsite safety, problem solving and customer service. Over time, those skills can lead to greater responsibility and different career paths within the industry.
Employers in the trades also look for qualities that are not always captured on a resume. Reliability matters. So does the willingness to learn, communicate with a team and take safety seriously. Roofing is physical work, but strong employees also need to think through challenges, adapt to changing site conditions and understand how their work affects the rest of the project.
Job seekers should also use a career fair as an opportunity to learn about the employer, not simply hand over a resume. Ask what a typical day looks like, what training is provided, how safety is managed and what opportunities exist for advancement. Find out whether the company focuses on residential or commercial work and what types of roofing systems employees can expect to work with. The answers can help you determine whether the workplace and career path are a good fit for you.
At Delta Roofing, our work is focused on commercial, industrial and institutional buildings across Ontario. Our teams work on flat and low-slope roofing, including installations, repairs, maintenance and restoration projects. Whether someone is already experienced in roofing or is exploring the skilled trades for the first time, we believe a good career starts with a willingness to learn, a strong work ethic and a team that is committed to doing the job safely and properly.
If you are considering a career in commercial roofing, take the time to explore the opportunities available and speak with people already working in the industry. A career fair can be the first conversation that leads to a long-term career.
