Removing barriers from trades careers
NAIT is pleased to offer the Accelerated Trade Entry program in partnership with the Government of Alberta. This program will support eligible newcomers interested in entering the trades.
Meanwhile, the Government is supporting us by sponsoring $900.00 CAD in tuition fees for such courses
The 3-year pre-apprenticeship program initiative is designed to support newcomers to Canada, interested in apprenticeship training while reducing the cultural, financial and language barriers these individuals face.
The Program development is a collaborative effort between NAIT’s Continuing Education and the School of Skilled Trades. The program will:
- Assess learners’ skills and suggest trade learning pathways to target knowledge gaps.
- Support learners as they navigate Alberta’s Apprenticeship and Industry Training entrance requirements.
- Provide additional trade-specific upskilling courses such as trades safety, technical drawing, small tools, and trades math, helping learners build a strong pre-trades foundation as they begin specializing in their chosen career paths.

Program entry requirements
To qualify for this program, you must have one of these Immigration statuses in Canada:
- Permanent residency
- Refugee with a confirmation letter
- Ukrainian Citizens Living as Temporary Residents in Canada with CUAET visa
- Post-Graduation Work Permit**
Pick two pre-apprenticeship courses for free:
- TRDE110: Intro to Trades Safety
- TRDE 120: Intro to Trades Math
- TRDE 130: Intro to Technical Drawing
- TRDE 140: Intro to Small Tools
- TRDE 170: English for a Specific Purpose

To get started, interested candidates must complete the Accelerated Trades Entry Assessment – TRDE 160. This online assessment evaluates your reading, math, and applied math levels to guide you through the available trades pathways.
Before registering for the online assessment, you must have a CLB3 (or higher) test result and a NAIT student ID.
