Why you should pursue an education in art and design - Career Fair Canada

For a creative mind, using art or design to communicate ideas is habitual. The creative individual seeks to draw or map out a concept visually, as opposed to crunching numbers or analyzing formulas.

This creative mind requires nurturing. Someone who can visualize and construct new garments, design interior spaces, or conceptualize entire video game storylines should be encouraged with formal education and resources.

Anyone can be trained in basic skills, such as typing or filing, but someone in a creative field needs to draw on their natural talent and think outside the box.

Some people choose to study in fields such as health care or business administration because it’s practical and financially stable.

The individuals who choose to study fashion, interior design, game design, or other creative fields, decide on this career path because they are following their passion. An unexplored talent that needs to be ventured.

An art and design education covers everything from fashion marketing, to architecture and interior design, to graphics and 3D modeling and animation. All of these professions require hands-on, skilled training to become familiar with industry-standard software, operations, and best practices.

Supplementary to natural talent, an education in art and design offers a vast array of skills from creating structural renderings, developing demo reels, manipulating digital images, and more so you’ll be job-ready with a practical skillset and a collection of portfolio work.

Most importantly, formal art and design training challenges you to unlock your creative potential. It enables you to design more (and better), be critical of your own work, and constantly improve your ideas.

The Visual College of Art and Design (VCAD) has just opened a new campus in Calgary (they also have a location in Vancouver!). Both campuses are accepting applications for a number of different programs.
